Michael Collins, Fraser Bell, Katie Burrell (Niall Mclaughlin Architects), and Claire McMenamin (Niall Mclaughlin Architects) ran a 4 day workshop at ESALA funded by the SSK preservation Trust and Edinburgh University.
The design outputs will feed into ongoing plans for a temporary shelter for the historic lifeboat in Donaghadee Northern Ireland whilst plans for a longer term home are developed.
Using a restricted palette of materials students explored three principal aspects of the brief using large scale detail models in two groups, this explored ideas for both a temporary structure, and a longer term shelter that the client body are currently seeking funds to develop.
We also had some very worthwhile guided building visits; Hart Street by Richard Murphy, and the Glasgow Colleges Riverside and Hillside by R&H, and a tour of the new Gorbals Housing by Elder and Cannon.
